Table of contents:

PlayStation Network (PSN) is a service offered by Sony as of November 2006 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation Portable (firmware 5.00 onwards) and PlayStation Vita consoles that allows those with a broadband Internet connection to play multiplayer games.

PlayStation Now

PlayStation Now is Sony's game streaming service, available with a separate subscription. It allows you to play a selection of PS4, PS3 and PS2 games on your PS4 or Windows PC. Since you stream the games, you don't have to download anything to your system (although many titles are available for download on PS4).

This is a great way to catch up on games you missed on previous systems or even enjoy PlayStation-exclusive titles if you only have a gaming PC.

PlayStation Trophies

PlayStation trophies are similar to Xbox achievements. These are objectives that you can complete in games, such as completing a level without dying or collecting every item. Normal trophies are available in bronze, silver and gold variants depending on their difficulty. Platinum trophies are special and are only unlocked when you earn all other trophies for a game.

As you earn trophies, you increase your 'trophy level', which is displayed on your profile. This is just for bragging rights, as trophies have no real value (apart from some games that provide you with a PlayStation theme or avatar to get the platinum trophy).

PlayStation Music and PlayStation Video

While most PlayStation Network content revolves around video games, Sony also offers other types of content.

PlayStation Music, which is now powered by Spotify, allows you to enjoy Spotify's extensive music catalogue on your PS4. You can open the app to listen to music through your TV or even use the Quick Menu to listen while you play. Spotify Premium is not required, so it's a useful feature if you don't like the in-game music.

PlayStation Video, meanwhile, is a digital video service similar to iTunes, Google TV or Amazon's Prime Video. You can rent or buy films and TV programmes to watch on your PlayStation console or mobile device.

PlayStation App

As mentioned, PSN is not limited to PlayStation systems. You can browse PlayStation Store using a web browser and PS Now is available for Windows.

However, you can also access PlayStation Network on the go. Sony offers some apps for both Android and iOS that allow you to access your account and use certain features anywhere.

The main PlayStation app allows you to check on your friends, personalise your profile, receive message alerts, shop on PS Store, and more. Definitely worth installing for PlayStation owners.

PlayStation Network connects PlayStation players

As we've seen, PlayStation Network makes all the great online features of modern PlayStation systems possible. Whether you're exploring PlayStation Store or streaming a game on PS Now, PlayStation Network powers your experience.
